Introduction <p>Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) adults face distinct challenges in the context of romantic relationships, including higher rates of intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization, and unique minority stressors, such as fetishization.</p> Methods <p>In a sample of 288 TGD adults (<i>M</i> age = 26.21&#xa0;years), we examined mental health effects of IPV and fetishization experiences, and whether internalized transphobia and social support mediated any effects. Data were collected in 2022.</p> Results <p>Sexual fetishization experiences predicted greater psychological distress via internalized transphobia. There were direct effects of IPV victimization on psychological distress, and indirect effects of IPV victimization via reduced social support.</p> Social Policy Implications <p>Results suggest that clinicians in mental health services should assess for experiences of fetishization and IPV in TGD populations given their association with mental health outcomes. Results highlight that initiatives designed to support TGD communities in navigating dating and romantic relationships in the context of societal stigma may be particularly important.</p>

Introduction

Methods
