Rice-duck integrated system (RDIS) sustains organic rice production in India

The Rice-duck integrated system (RDIS) is more lucrative in many Asian countries but is uncommon in India. Hence, a two-year investigation was formulated to study the impact of the RDIS on rice and duck production under organic farming conditions. Three varied numbers (200, 300, and 400 ha−1) of ducks were allowed into the rice fields from three times (10, 20, and 30 days after transplanting—DAT) up to the flower initiation of rice. These nine treatment combinations were compared with the control (rice alone). The findings showed that releasing 400 ducks ha−1 at any time (10, 20, or 30 DAT) into the rice fields significantly increased the number of tillers, productive tillers, panicle weight, grain yield (8.62 and 28.01% across years), and straw yield of rice, duck yield, rice equivalent yield, and gross returns compared to other treatments. However, a decreased rice plant population was noticed due to the release of ducks (of any number) from 10 DAT. The release of 400 ducks ha−1 from 10 DAT earned a higher net return and benefit–cost ratio, besides an additional duck production of 324.2 to 373.2 kg ha−1. Hence, the study concluded that rice-duck integration had a positive influence on rice growth and yield, and benefits the economic parameters. Specifically, releasing 400 ducks ha−1 from 10 DAT proved to be a cost-effective and sustainable approach for organic rice production in India.
