“Teacher, I Closed My Triangle”: The Triangle as an Assessment Method for Children’s Mathematics and Literacy Learning in an Early Years Setting
摘要
This study examines the triangle assessment method used in a bilingual preschool setting in Oman. The study focuses on how the teachers use the method to assess and document children’s mathematics and literacy learning in individual activities. It aims to contribute to academic interest by investigating formative assessment processes in an early years classroom. The data collection includes extensive observations of one-to-one child–teacher interactions and peer interactions during individual activities, as well as interviews with the teachers involved and illustrations of teachers’ documentation of children’s learning. The findings indicate that the triangle assessment method has benefits for children’s mathematics and literacy learning and also underscore the importance of ongoing assessment for individual children’s daily learning in mathematics and literacy. The study identifies two features of the triangle assessment, which involve providing a comprehensive assessment for children’s mathematics and literacy learning and supporting self-correction through child-centered assessment. It also offers suggestions to extend the triangle assessment approach.
