<p>The Chatla floodplain wetland in Southern Assam provides essential ecosystem services, supporting local livelihoods through fishing and paddy cultivation. However, these communities are increasingly vulnerable to climate change impacts, including altered eco-hydrological conditions, declining water quality, and wetland loss. This study assesses the socioecological vulnerability of floodplain farmers in Chatla using the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) framework, focusing on exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity. Household interviews were conducted in 10 randomly selected villages, with 100 households participating. Farmers reported significant vulnerability to climate change, such as temperature fluctuations, erratic rainfall, and extreme weather events like frequent flooding and water stress, disrupting agriculture and reducing incomes. Declines in “Boro” rice production and fish diversity were particularly notable, with floods causing damage to agriculture and fish habitats across the studied villages. Villages with inadequate household infrastructure exhibited limited adaptability to climate change, while those employing better crop and fish maintenance techniques were more successful in maintaining productivity. Farmers’ decision-making was shaped by their education and farming experience, with generally low educational attainment across the villages. Despite these challenges, villagers diversified their income through wage labour, small businesses, or migrating to nearby cities or larger urban areas in India for survival. The study underscores the need for improved infrastructure, sustainable agricultural practices, and enhanced adaptive strategies to support floodplain farmers in addressing climate change challenges.</p>
