<p>Hitherto, <i>Distichoplax biserialis</i> (Corallinales; Rhodophyta) has been documented from numerous Paleocene-Eocene successions of the Neo-Tethyan realm. However, this taxon still remains enigmatic among the Cenozoic coralline algae with several uncertainties pertaining to its origin, diversification and causes of extinction. Here, we document a new record of <i>Distichoplax biserialis</i> from the lower Paleogene subsurface sequence of the Bengal Basin, India in a moderately well-preserved biotic assemblage. The microfacies associations and major skeletal components are analysed to present valuable data pertaining to the paleoenvironment of <i>Distichoplax</i>. <i>D. biserialis</i> thrived in the shallow-marine settings during the Thanetian with highly dominant populations and suffered massive decline during the Ypresian to Lutetian eventually going extinct.</p>
