Diagenesis and reservoir quality of the Lower Aptian Carbonates: an example from lower Shu’aiba and the equivalent Upper Qishn formations, Sultanate of Oman

This research seeks to explore the diagenetic processes influencing the Lower Aptian Carbonates in Northern and Central Oman. Additionally, it aims to integrate these findings with an analysis of depositional environments and porosity types, using gas porosimetry and permeametry to assess reservoir quality at the microfacies level. The outcropping Lower Shu’aiba Formation in Wadi Bani Kharus, Northern Oman and its equivalent Upper Qishn Formation in Wadi Baw, Central Oman, were selected for their excellent representation of Lower Aptian Carbonates. Petrographic and geochemical assessments revealed that the Lower Aptian Carbonates have undergone regional diagenetic variations that significantly impact reservoir quality. In North Oman, it is characterized by a lack of dissolution features, intense fracturing and a subsequent calcite cementation, resulting in porosity values up to 2.6% and absence of permeability across all microfacies. Central Oman exhibits dolomitization and dissolution features, coupled with minimal calcite cementation and compaction, which enhance reservoir quality. Across all microfacies, porosity values reach up to 27.5% and permeability as high as 159 mD, with the fine-crystalline bioclastic dolomite microfacies demonstrating the best reservoir quality. Furthermore, a diverse range of primary and secondary porosity types is observed, with secondary porosity being more dominant. These findings reveal that diagenesis plays a more significant role than depositional characteristics in influencing reservoir quality.
