<p>This study investigates the impact of energy accessibility on information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure development in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) using a dataset spanning 48 countries from 1999 to 2021. The study uses the Driscoll-Kraay regression technique to examine the relationship between energy accessibility and Internet usage, mobile phone subscriptions, and fixed telephone subscriptions as indicators of ICT infrastructure development. The findings reveal robust evidence that access to electricity significantly positively affects the region’s Internet usage, mobile subscriptions, and fixed telephone subscription development. However, a negative relationship is observed between energy intensity and mobile as well as fixed telephone infrastructure. The heterogeneous analysis across income groups within SSA highlights the importance of energy access for promoting Internet usage, mobile subscriptions, and fixed telephone subscriptions in diverse economic contexts. The study also identifies a bidirectional relationship between energy accessibility and Internet usage, with increased Internet demand leading to higher energy consumption. Furthermore, a unidirectional flow is observed from mobile and fixed telephone infrastructure to energy accessibility, indicating their positive contribution to energy accessibility in the region. The study’s results underscore the significance of enhancing electricity access for the expansion and efficiency of ICT networks, bridging the digital divide, and promoting sustainable economic development. The proposed policy recommendations provide guidance for policymakers and stakeholders to promote energy accessibility and inclusive ICT infrastructure development in the region.</p>
