<p>Climate change is the greatest threat to global health in the 21st&#xa0;century and, together with the other ecological crises, affects people with rheumatic diseases. Life on earth is only possible within planetary boundaries that represent a&#xa0;safe space for humanity. Based on this, the concept of planetary health describes the relationship between human health and the health of the planet, and enables a&#xa0;better understanding of pathogenesis and approaches for prevention and treatments. Epidemiologic studies conducted across the globe have explored the impact of environmental exposures related to the current and expected future effects of climate change on individuals with rheumatic and musculoskeletal conditions. Air pollution and heat affect all patients with rheumatic diseases, but with a&#xa0;disproportionate burden on individuals with a&#xa0;lower socioeconomic status. In addition, psychological stress, which, for example, increases in extreme weather events, influences the risk for and activity of rheumatic diseases. Rheumatologists have various opportunities to leave their ecological handprint. They can participate in making healthcare more sustainable, integrate the role of environmental factors into teaching and training, promote research in this area, advocate for a&#xa0;healthy environment, and use climate-sensitive health counseling to support patients in the face of ecological crises.</p>
