Genetic evidence for the presence of Chamaeleo africanus in Greece outside the Pylos region
摘要
The European distribution of Chamaeleo africanus in literature has been confined within the region of Gialova, Pylos in the western Peloponnese. Located in southeastern Europe at an intersection of three continents, the coastal regions of Southern mainland Greece represent a unique habitat for C. africanus in Europe. In early April 2025, a scientific expedition resulted in the identification of an undocumented population of C. africanus within the GR2320001 - Natura 2000 protected region. Seven specimens were located, and one was also sampled for genetic analysis. Ribosomal DNA 16 S characterization confirmed the presence of C. africanus in the studied region. This identification expanded the previously reported geographic range of C. africanus in Europe. This expedition and follow-up molecular analysis underscore the theoretical basis for conservation strategies and efforts for this unique species of chameleons outside their native African habitat.
