Islamic Perspectives on Mindfulness-Based Interventions: A Commentary on Black American Muslim Communities
摘要
The scoping review conducted by Haidar et al. (Mindfulness, 14(8):1852–1867, 2023) examined the role of religion and spirituality in adapting mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) for Black American communities. The review found that Christianity and generalized spirituality were the dominant frames of reference in existing research. Mindfulness was interpreted by some participants as aligned with prayer and scriptural engagement, while others expressed concerns about its association with non-Christian traditions. A significant research gap was identified concerning the absence of studies focusing on Black Muslim communities, despite their demographic and religious relevance. The present commentary addresses the lack of Islamic perspectives in existing MBI research and outlines a structured analytical approach to integrate these perspectives. It examines the religious framing of MBIs, conceptualizes Islam as a relevant psychological and spiritual framework, and proposes research directions that ensure cultural and theological alignment with Black Muslim contexts.
