Unravelling the Recent Advancements of Chitosan-Based Nanocarriers for Management of Acne Vulgaris

Acne vulgaris is a common skin condition that significantly affects the well-being of a large number of individuals, including both teenagers and adults. It is distinguished by the presence of inflammatory or non-inflammatory lesions on the back, shoulders, and face. Certain strains of bacteria, including Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes), can trigger an inflammatory reaction in sebaceous glands, indicating that C. acnes play a key part in the development of acne vulgaris lesions. This condition is complex, and its multifactorial nature necessitates the use of novel and efficient therapeutic approaches. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in interest in this field, particularly in the utilization of natural topical treatments. Among these treatments, chitosan, a biodegradable biopolymer generated from deacetylated chitin, possesses significant qualities for treating acne vulgaris owing to its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antimicrobial activity. This review summarizes new findings about the use of chitosan nanocarriers like nanogel, nanofibers, microparticles, and nanoparticles in the treatment of acne vulgaris. Data pertaining to patents, preclinical research, and clinical uses of chitosan-based nanocarriers with anti-acne qualities have all been examined in this study. This article provides an in-depth study of the potential of chitosan nanocarriers as a new and holistic method for treating acne vulgaris.
