Corrosion Characteristics of AA 7075 Aluminum Alloy Joints Produced by Double-Side Friction Stir Welding

Thick section Al alloy friction stir welds exhibit decreased weld properties, and double-side friction stir welding (DS FSW) is considered suitable to tackle this. Thus, DS FSW was used to make 10 mm thick AA7075 joints. The welds were evaluated for corrosion behavior using salt fog and pitting corrosion tests. Additionally, the weld microstructures and precipitate morphology were examined using optical and transmission electron microscopes. As per the salt fog corrosion test, corrosion resistance rises as the pH of the salt solution rises and corrosion rate falls as exposure time increases. Additionally, it was discovered that the weld had a higher level of corrosion attack than the parent metal. However, among the welded samples, double-side friction stir welds exhibit increased salt fog and pitting corrosion resistance than that of normal single-side friction stir welds. Furthermore, the weld nugget demonstrated superior corrosion resistance within the combined weld region, whereas the heat-affected zone showed a more noticeable corrosion attack caused by the presence of precipitate-free zones in this area.
