<p>The advancement of hydrogen infrastructure is pivotal for the broader adoption of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCVs), which depend on high-pressure hydrogen refueling stations (HRSs). A key challenge in these stations is the susceptibility of steel components to hydrogen diffusion, which can cause hydrogen embrittlement (HE), leading to component failures. To ensure the safe and efficient operation of HRSs, it is essential to implement effective protective measures against HE. This review paper addresses the development of protective polymer coatings designed to prevent hydrogen diffusion into steel components. It offers a comprehensive survey of various coating types and materials, evaluating their hydrogen permeability, mechanical and tribological properties, as well as their commercial viability and cost-effectiveness. The review aims to present a detailed overview of current research on hydrogen permeation barrier (HPB) coatings, emphasizing their role in improving the durability and safety of steel components within HRSs. The review concludes that the polymer coatings are the most suitable for hydrogen infrastructure to mitigate the HE issues and provides various advantages over other coatings.</p>
