In situ gamma-ray spectrometry as a non-destructive test for the assessment of building stones: methodology, application, and interpretation

A methodology was proposed for building stones characterization by means of in situ gamma-ray spectrometry with a portable spectrometer. This methodology involves the right selection of suitable outcrops for comparisons, the correction of anomalous data caused by moisture, and the interpretation according to lithology, mineralogy, weathering/deterioration, and moisture content. This methodology was tested in the Historic Center of San Luis Potosi, Mexico, which was declared a cultural World Heritage Site in 2010. Specifically, it was tested in two constructions, the Caja del Agua Conservera and Caja del Agua del Santuario. Both are composed of stone blocks of rhyolitic ignimbrites of the Cantera Formation that outcrops in the west, south, and southwest of San Luis Potosi. With the gamma-ray spectrometry was demonstrated that both constructions have lower radiation in relation to the outcrop due to weathering processes, mainly loss of potassium and variations of uranium and thorium. Spectrometry proved useful in identifying stone blocks with moisture and salts due to their lower radiation in these conditions caused by attenuation. In addition, it was possible to determine that certain forms of deterioration such as detachment influence radiation variations.
