摘要

Evaluation of the impact of thermal treatments on rock properties is crucial for various rock engineering projects such as geothermal energy extraction, underground coal gasification, nuclear waste disposal, enhanced oil recovery, wellbore stability and drilling & blasting in rock masses. Therefore, researchers around the world have thoroughly explored rock properties as a function of temperature variations and thermal treatments. However, a comprehensive review of the general concept of thermal damage mechanisms and their impacts on the physico-mechanical properties of various rock types remains elusive in the existing literature. Therefore, this study aims to provide a concise review and summarizing extensive experimental findings on the physico-mechanical properties of key lithologies—such as granite, sandstone, carbonate rocks, basalt, and shale under different thermal treatments. The generalized thermal damage mechanism, i.e., thermal induced physical and chemical changes, and its relationship with strengthening or weakening mechanical properties are also discussed. This review article will help in developing a comprehensive idea about the thermal damage mechanism in different rock types and guide future research in this domain.
