CT Detection of an Overlooked Hyoid Bone Fracture During Secondary Survey in Isolated Mandibular Trauma
摘要
This report presents the case of a 23-year-old male with concomitant bilateral mandibular body fractures and an incidental hyoid bone fracture identified on CT imaging during the secondary survey. Diagnostic laryngoscopy further revealed unilateral vocal cord palsy on the left side. With no evidence of airway compromise following a period of observation, he then underwent fixation of his mandibular fractures under general anesthesia with uneventful recovery. The report underscores the clinical significance and diagnostic challenges posed by hyoid bone fractures, often overlooked in the context of maxillofacial trauma. Although these fractures are typically managed conservatively, prompt recognition is critical to avoid severe complications, including potential airway compromise.
