Paediatric Nasal Tip Schwannoma: Surgical Challenges in Aesthetic Tip Plasty
摘要
Schwannoma of the sinonasal tract is uncommon in clinical practice and accounts for 4% of all tumours. Recurrent schwannoma of the external nose is extremely rare, and very few case reports have been documented in the literature.
Case ReportA 13-year-old boy presented to the outpatient department with a slow-growing swelling over the tip of the nose and complete nasal obstruction (left side). The incision biopsy was consistent with schwannoma, and the tumour was excised, keeping the function and aesthetics of the nose.
ConclusionPaediatric nasal tip schwannoma is extremely rare in clinical practice. The variable and non-specific clinical presentation makes the preoperative diagnosis difficult. Although fine-needle cytology can be diagnostic, an incisional biopsy may be required to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other possible diagnoses. Contrast MRI can be a useful radiological investigation that assists in diagnosis and gives valuable information about the tumour for better surgical planning. Although surgical excision is considered the gold standard treatment, one must be well-versed in the complex surgical anatomy and reconstructive techniques of the nose to achieve optimal functional and aesthetic outcomes.
