Aesthetic Analysis and Evaluation of Indo-Ariyan Faces: An Anthropometric Study
摘要
To assess and evaluate the facial aesthetic proportions of the Indian populace belonging to the Indo-Ariyan race.
Methods and MaterialsAn anthropometric cross-sectional cohort study was conducted on Indian population enrolling subjects belonging to only the Aryan race with same racial decent and residing in India. This study evaluated 98 subjects for the facial anthropometric data. Subjects betwen the age group of 18 to 25 years, healthy subjects with normal body mass index, subjects with well-balanced face and subjects with Class I occlusal relationship with near normal dental arches are included in this study. Subjects with known developmental or acquired facial abnormalities, subjects with a history of prior orthodontic treatment / any reconstructive or facial aesthetic surgery and subjects with either Class II or Class III occlusal relationship or with dental crowding or spacing are excluded from this study. Both linear (horizontal & vertical) and angular measurements were taken to evaluate the morphologic characteristics of the maxillofacial complex. Twenty-two linear measurements and four angular measurements were performed using standard anthropometric instruments. Standard anthropometric surface landmarks were marked on the face prior to obtaining the measurement using sliding vernier calliper and geometric compass.
ResultsThe predominant facial type noticed in the Indo-Ariyan race was mesoprosopic followed by euryprosopic. There is sexual dimorphism among the males and females belonging to the Indo-Ariyan race in the upper and lower thirds of the face. The parameters like the anterior facial height exhibited balance with the total facial height. Numerical measurements obtained from the Indo-Ariyan race exhibited shorter lower anterior facial height and deviation of facial width parameters from the divine proportion. It was observed that when compared to Caucasian race, the population from the Indo-Ariyan race showed smaller lower facial height, width of mouth, nasal bridge inclination, naso-labial angle, length of nose, columella length, intercanthal distance, and chin throat angle.
ConclusionFacial proportions of the Indo-Ariyan race differed considerably from that of the Caucasian race in certain parameters. It is prudent to have norms for a standard facial analysis which is race specific particularly for Indian scenarios for diagnosing and planning treatment for patients with dentofacial deformity.
