Comparative evaluation on the efficacy of photobiomodulation using 640 nm diode laser versus local anesthetic gel in pain mitigation prior to conventional local infiltration: a pilot split mouth study
摘要
This pilot study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of photobiomodulation (PBM) and local anaesthetic gel (LA gel) administered before needle insertion in reducing the pain associated with LA infiltration with the help of 640 nm wavelength delivering a total of 18 J/cm2.
Materials and methodsEight participants undergoing periodontal surgery were assigned to two groups. Group A received PBM, while Group B received LA gel before local infiltration. Pain levels in both groups were assessed using the visual analogue scale (VAS) immediately after the needle prick.
ResultThere was a statistically significant difference in pain level experienced when compared between PBM and LA gel. The mean pain score in PBM group was lower than LA gel group (p = < 0.001).
ConclusionThe PBM therapy can be successfully used to decrease the level of pain experienced during local infiltration in periodontal surgery.
