Background <p>Since decades, numerous facial fractures have been effectively treated using an intraoral approach. However, an extraoral approach is usually employed for managing fractures of the infraorbital rim. This article aims to review the validity of such an intraoral approach for managing infraorbital rim fractures. A case report on the same is supplemented along with this review.</p> Methodology <p>This review was conducted using a narrative search for all the qualitative and quantitative articles present worldwide, related to the management of infraorbital rim fractures via an intraoral approach on PubMed, Scopus, etc., and their findings were then compared to that of available data regarding traditional approaches to the orbit.</p> Case Report &amp; Discussion <p>A patient was treated for his multiple facial fractures at our center, where his left infraorbital rim fracture was specifically approached intraorally; for open reduction and internal fixation of the displaced rim, without using any extraoral incision. The major problem resulting in post-operative complications after using such an approach is the amount of care taken toward handling the infraorbital nerve. This nerve exhibits greater anatomical variation and the average location of the foramen it exits from is also not clear either. An intraoral vestibular approach is an effective method to gain access and successfully manage the infraorbital rim fractures if certain protocols (periosteal scoring, tunneling, etc.) are followed.</p> Conclusion <p>Thorough knowledge of the anatomy coupled with proper surgical technique can establish this intraoral vestibular approach as a scar-free and safer option to effectively manage infraorbital rim fractures while setting it as an alternative to traditional extraoral approaches.</p>

Background
