A Prospective Study on Comparison of the Effectiveness of Transmucosal Plate and Intra-arch Wire Fixation in the Management of Palatal Fracture

The aim of this study is to evaluate the outcomes in patient diagnosed with palatal fractures treated with transmucosal plate and comparison of its reduction efficacy with intra-arch wire fixation.
Materials and MethodA prospective study was conducted on 20 patients, wherein the patients were categorised into two groups, group A and group B based on treatment arms based on random sampling methodology. All the patients in group A underwent transmucosal miniplates stabilisation technique, and group B underwent intra-arch wire stabilisation technique. Details on the intra-arch molar distance and pre- and post-operative occlusion in both strategies were gathered and compared.
ResultsThe mean molar distance pre-operatively was 6.32 ± 0.37 for group A and 5.83 ± 0.24 for group B. After one-day follow-up, the mean molar distance was reduced to 5.54 ± 0.28 for group A and 5.34 ± 0.13 for group B. Statistical significance was seen for group A. After 1 week of follow-up, the mean for both group A and group B remained the same with statistical significance for group A. After 6 weeks of follow-up, the mean molar distance for group A remained the same, but the mean molar distance for group B slightly increased to 5.54 ± 0.17 (Table
