Background <p>Mandibular third molar (M3) removal involves manipulating both hard and soft tissues, resulting in post-operative complications like pain, swelling, and trismus, impacting the patient’s quality of life. Surgeons use various alternatives to minimize these issues, with a key emphasis on selecting optimal incisions and flap designs. The study aimed to assess and compare the use of a scalpel and a diode laser in surgical removal of impacted mandibular third molars. </p> Material and Methods <p>This randomized split mouth study included 20 patients with bilaterally impacted mandibular third molars, aged 18–50, divided into two study groups. In Group 1, incision was placed using a laser, while in Group 2, a no.15 scalpel was used. Clinical parameter including ease of access, quantity of local anesthetic used, presence of bleeding, duration of surgery, pain, swelling, trismus, total number of analgesics used postoperatively, and complications, were evaluated for both groups.</p> Results <p>When comparing Group 1 to Group 2, the statistical analysis showed a significant decrease in pain (<i>p</i> values of 0.012 and &lt; 0.001), bleeding (<i>p</i> value of 0.013), and analgesic use following surgery (<i>p</i> value of &lt; 0.001). On the other hand, no statistically significant variation was found in the other assessed parameters.</p> Conclusion <p>Within the scope of this study laser incision proved to be an effective alternative compared to scalpel incision while removing mandibular third molar. It showed good clinical outcome in terms of reducing the bleeding, post-operative pain and number of analgesics used. </p>

Background

Material and Methods
