Evaluating talent identification in junior track and field athletes in Germany: insights from sport motor and anthropometric testing

Talent identification in sports is a complex, multifaceted process aimed at recognizing individuals with exceptional athletic potential and directing them towards appropriate developmental pathways. This study retrospectively evaluated the effectiveness of 12 sport motor and 5 anthropometric tests in differentiating squad levels among 13 to 16-year-old track and field athletes (n = 1311, f: 704), considering gender, age, and discipline blocks. Athletes were grouped based on their squad affiliation, and their test results prior to nomination were compared between groups using mean value comparisons with Bonferroni–Holm correction. These analyses were conducted separately for each discipline block and test. Tests such as the drop jump, countermovement jump, forward shot throw, and backward overhead shot throw showed significant differences between Regional and National Squad athletes, underscoring the importance of explosive strength and power in talent identification. The 12-minute run enabled the differentiation of the squad levels of running/race walking athletes. The age of 15 was particularly notable for the most significant group differences, aligning with the typical age for first-time nominations to the National Squad. This study highlights the strengths and limitations of using anthropometric and sport motor tests in the talent identification process, suggesting that tests like drop jump, countermovement jump, and backward overhead shot throw are valuable tests to differentiate between squad levels in athletics. The results strongly indicate that test batteries have to be interpreted in the context of gender, age, and the specific sport.
