摘要

The soaring increase of organic waste worldwide, especially in developing countries, has gained attention from both administrators and the public. Uncontrolled disposal of organic wastes may cause secondary environmental pollution and threaten human health. In the past decade, the upcycling of organic wastes by black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) gained increasing interest since BSFL can minimize the organic wastes and, at the same time, absorb nutrients in the wastes to produce value-added biomass for animal feed or renewable energy. Except for the roles of BSFL in the reduction of organic waste, additional environmental benefits of BSFL treatment are also crucial for the sustainability and circular economy. This review summarizes both direct and indirect environmental benefits of BSFL for upcycling organic waste beyond waste minimization. The direct benefits include the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions, production of biodiesel as renewable energy, degradation of organic contaminants, and the reduction of odorous chemicals, while the indirect benefits are represented by the application of BSFL frass to substitute chemical fertilizers and the improvement of the immune system of the poultry and livestock with BSFL as a feed additive to reduce the use of antibiotics. Furthermore, the challenges of BSFL’s application are discussed and future perspectives are proposed.
