Fractionation of Yellow Mombin (Spondias mombin L.) Residue Using Hydroethanolic Extraction, Adsorption on Amberlite XAD7HP Resin and Alkaline Pretreatment

Yellow mombin (Spondias mombin L.) is a tropical fruit appreciated in Brazil for its sweet, citrus flavor and used to make juices and ice cream. However, there is still no suitable application for the residue of the pulping of yellow mombin. In this sense, this study aimed to obtain value-added products from yellow mombin fruit residue. Hydroethanolic extraction was used on residues to recover bioactive phenolics from the liquor, which were fractionated and adsorbed onto Amberlite XAD7HP resin. The solid post-extraction fraction (SPF) and alkaline pretreatment (ALK) were characterized for cellulose, hemicellulose, Klason lignin, ash, moisture, extractives, and crystallinity, and subjected to enzymatic hydrolysis and semi-simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSSF) for second-generation ethanol production. Hydroethanolic extraction of the residue yielded gallic acid (2.863 mg/100 g), ferulic acid (1.080 mg/100 g), and catechin (19.383 mg/100 g). The resin effectively separated the phenolic compounds from liquor I, where the eluted products exhibited excellent antioxidant potential, inhibiting DPPH (158.0 mmol TE/g) and ABTS (1.20 mmol TE/g) radicals. In the pretreated material (ALK), there was a reduction in hemicellulose (12.27%) and extractives (9.0%), an increase of 18% in cellulose, and a crystallinity index of 71%. In addition, it released more glucose and xylose than SPF, even at low cellulase dosages, where 15% (w/v) of solids and 20 FPU/g were converted into 56.65 g/L of glucose, 11.27 g/L of xylose by enzymatic hydrolysis and 30.32 g/L of ethanol by SSSF. Therefore, the pretreatment and subsequent processing steps are simple and attractive routes to valorize yellow mombin residue.
