<p>Chitin and chitosan are highly sought after for their antimicrobial properties and versatile functionality. In the past, chitin is extracted mainly from crustacean sources. Nonetheless, the recent establishment of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) production facilities offers an alternative source of insect-based chitin. The amount of BSFL chitin is anticipated to increase at a compound annual growth rate of 40.4% due to the demand for higher protein-based meals and the urge to solve the waste management of organic waste. BSFL chitin is a potential bioresource to be used in different fields such as packaging, textile, medical, agricultural, wastewater and catalytic reaction. Hence, this paper elucidates the different BSFL chitin/chitosan extraction techniques, the differences in chitin/chitosan characteristics depending on the parts/stages of chitin extraction and the different usage of BSFL chitin/chitosan. It also discusses the other possible applications of BSFL chitin and chitosan. Challenges that are hindering the progress of BSFL chitin were thoroughly discussed and recommendations were provided for advancement.</p> Graphical Abstract <p></p>
