Purpose <p>The rapid growth of the global population, along with increased industrial and agricultural activities, has resulted in a significant rise in the production of both organic and inorganic waste. The rational management and biotransformation of this waste has become essential to create stable, humus-rich and hygienic compost. This study aims to evaluate the effect of inorganic additives (slag) on compost’s physicochemical parameters during the composting of horse manure and to assess the impact of different doses of humic substances (HS) derived from the compost on the growth, yield, and quality of radish crops.</p> Methods <p>Composting was carried out for six weeks using horse manure with and without slag. Physicochemical parameters such as pH, electrical conductivity, total organic carbon, Carbon-to-Nitrogen ratio (C/N), and available nutrients were measured. Three levels of HS (60, 120, and 180&#xa0;mg/kg) from the compost were applied to radish crops in a greenhouse trial to evaluate their impact on plant growth, quality and soil physicochemical properties.</p> Results <p>Slag addition to horse manure reduced the pH and enhanced organic matter mineralization, leading to increased nitrogen and phosphorus content by 46% and 67%, respectively. The C/N ratio decreased by 52% with slag addition. In the greenhouse trial, HS application improved radish yield and stomatal conductance, with a 30% and 15% increase, respectively, compared to the control. Sugar content in radish bulbs was doubled with slag-based HS application.</p> Conclusion <p>Humic substances derived from slag-based compost significantly improved radish growth, yield, and quality, demonstrating their potential as effective organic farming practices under controlled conditions.</p> Graphical Abstract <p></p>
