Valorization of Lychee (Litchi chinensis) Processing Residues (Peel and Seed) Through Incorporation into Poly(vinyl alcohol)-Based Films for Use in Packaging

Lychee peel is a rich source of antioxidant compounds, while lychee seeds offer potential as a source of biopolymers for packaging films. This study aimed to develop and characterize polymeric films based on poly(vinyl alcohol) and lychee seed extract, as well as enhance their biological and mechanical properties using lychee peel extract. The extracts were evaluated for total phenolic content, antioxidant activity, and antimicrobial properties, while the films were characterized using SEM, XRD, FTIR, as well as mechanical and permeability assays. Antibacterial activity testing revealed that the peel extract had significant inhibition potential, reducing Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella spp. populations by 7.7 and 3.4 log cycles. Incorporating lychee peel extract into the films led to a 71% increase in elongation at break, a reduction in total soluble matter, and near-zero light transmittance in the 200–300 nm range, while improved their antimicrobial activity. SEM analysis demonstrated a more homogeneous surface with reduced roughness, while FTIR analysis indicated a decrease in the wavenumber of the band associated with O–H bond stretching in the presence of the peel extract. These results suggest that compounds in the peel extract favored hydrogen bonding that improved the mechanical properties of the material, showing potential for use in packaging, particularly for photosensitive products.
