Assessment and Modeling of Slaughterhouses Waste Sustainable Management in West African Cities: Cases of Main Cities of Benin, Niger and Burkina Faso

Slaughterhouse waste management is a major challenge in urban areas of West Africa. This study aims to assess waste generation and management in slaughterhouses in six major West African cities in order to propose models for the sustainable management of slaughterhouse waste. A better knowledge of the quantity of waste produced and of the management facilities would definitely allow the elaboration of policies for a sustainable waste management. Observation and interviews with slaughterhouse officials were used to collect data on slaughterhouse waste management. In addition, quantitative data on the dynamics of slaughtering from 1999 to 2019 and the quantity of waste produced were collected from the slaughterhouse’s records registers and archives. The collected data were analyzed using R.4.0.4 software. The modeling of waste production was performed using time series analysis from 1999 to 2019. The projection to 2040 was made using the forecast package. The results showed that over the years, the quantity of waste produced varies from one city to another, depending on the type of waste produced and the dynamics of slaughter. Furthermore, the blood and wastewater are estimated to be 4,500,000 L/year and 25,500 L/year, respectively, at the end of the modeling period (2040). This represents a growth rate of 77.73% and 75.24% respectively compared to the current year (2021). By 2040, the quantity of faeces waste produced would be better managed or recycled in West African cities studied with less than 10% increase compared to today. Horn waste will increase by 52.63%. It’s clear that wastewater, blood and horn waste represent a profound challenge. It’s therefore urgent to find opportunities and ways to recycle these wastes for the sustainability of the environment and public health purposes.
