The contamination of raw vegetables marketed in northeastern Iran with eggs, cysts, and parasites

Public health is still affected by parasitic diseases. Fresh raw vegetables play a significant role in transmitting parasitic diseases. This study investigated the prevalence of parasitic contamination in raw edible vegetables available at local shops in Mashhad, a metropolitan city in northeast Iran. A cross-sectional study was conducted during the fall and winter of 2022 in Mashhad, Iran. A cluster sampling method with two stages was employed to collect 960 samples from 30 randomly selected stores. The flotation and ethyl-acetate-formalin methods were utilized to examine all samples, which were then analyzed under a microscope. Of the total samples, 131 (13.64%) were found to be contaminated. Among these, 74 samples (56.4%) were infected with metazoa, while 60 samples (43.6%) were infected with protozoa. The highest level of contamination was observed in Allium fistulosum (leek) with 24 samples (18.35%), and the lowest level was found in Raphanus sativus (radish) with 4 samples (3.06%). The most common parasitic contaminant was Blastocystis hominis, found in 21 samples (16.03%), followed by Entamoeba coli cysts in 18 samples (13.73%), and the least common was Enterobius vermicularis eggs, found in 5 samples (3.81%). This study indicates a significant prevalence of parasitic contamination in edible vegetables. Notably, a higher prevalence was observed in peri-urban areas near a seasonal river compared to central and distant regions, although the differences were not statistically significant. Enhancing public education and improving health conditions in this area could help reduce the spread of parasitic diseases.
