The Role and Potential Mechanism of Pectin and Pectin Oligosaccharides in Treating Intestinal Inflammation by Regulating Gut Microbiota

The pathogenesis of intestinal inflammation is highly complex. Its pathological manifestations are characterized by intestinal barrier damage, disruption of immune homeostasis, and gut microbiota dysbiosis. Current therapeutic approaches are often limited by suboptimal efficacy and adverse effects. Recently, prebiotics have shown significant potential in alleviating inflammation by targeting the modulation of gut microbiota to improve the intestinal microenvironment. Pectin and its enzymatic hydrolysate, pectin oligosaccharides (POS), are expected to become important prebiotics for alleviating intestinal inflammation. This narrative review summarizes the experimental evidence demonstrating that pectin and POS alleviate intestinal inflammation by modulating the “gut barrier-microbiota-metabolism-immunity” axis. The key underlying mechanisms include restoration of the intestinal barrier through upregulation of tight junction proteins such as occludin and ZO-1, remodeling of the gut microbiota and associated metabolites, particularly short-chain fatty acids, and fine-tuning of immune responses by balancing pro- and anti-inflammatory pathways. The review further identifies key research barriers, particularly the inherent structural complexity of pectin and the insufficient mechanistic studies hindering its application. The article concludes with a perspective on the future utilization of pectin and POS.
