Temporal Dynamics in Biochemical Composition, Energy Reserves and Condition Index of Blood Cockle, Tegillarca granosa (L., 1758) Natural Population from a Tropical Monsoon Coastal Habitat
摘要
We report seasonal dynamics in gross biochemical compositions, energy reserves and condition index of Asiatic blood cockle (Tegillarca granosa) natural population collected monthly over a year from a tropical coastal habitat of Bangladesh. Temporal variations in the biochemical composition of a standard animal were evident. The proportion of crude protein, crude lipids, carbohydrates, ash, crude fiber and moisture contents of the clam varied from 11.44 to 15.07%, 1.04 to 3.79%, 0.24 to 3.68%, 1.27 to 3.30%, 0.57 to 1.91% and 73.69 to 82.13% respectively on wet weight basis. Water quality parameters (temperature, salinity and pH) and biochemical components of T. granosa had different levels of correlations among themselves. Total energy varied from 7.62 to 11.61 kcal/shell free dry weight (SFDWT) of a standard animal over the 12-month study period. Protein content was the main contributor to total energy (70.32 ± 6.98%) followed by lipid and carbohydrate. Storage of energy in T. granosa occurred from January to March, and from May to June whereas, energy expensed over storage during July to November, and from March to April. Monthly changes in condition index were evident ranging from 1.62 to 2.58. The results suggest that T. granosa natural population from tropical environment is an excellent source of nutrition, and indicate biochemically favorable periods for the species in the habitat.
