<p>The dinoflagellate genus <i>Scrippsiella</i> is a common member of phytoplankton. However, the diversity of <i>Scrippsiella</i> in Korea has not been fully investigated. An unspecified <i>Scrippsiella</i> species was collected from Jangmok Bay, Geoje Island, Korea. Morphological characteristics of the species were examined using light, fluorescence and scanning electron microscopy. Molecular phylogeny was also analyzed based on a combined dataset of ITS and LSU rDNA. The Korean isolate exhibited a conical epitheca and a hemispherical hypotheca and had distinctive asymmetric anterior intercalary plates, with the general plate formula of <i>Scrippsiella</i> species. These morphological features are identical to those of <i>S. irregularis</i>. The phylogenetic tree based on concatenated ITS and LSU rDNA sequences revealed that the Korean isolate was grouped with the clade comprising <i>S. irregularis</i>. However, based on the secondary structures of ITS1 and ITS2, <i>S. irregularis</i>, including the Korean isolate, was divided into three ribotypes: ribotype 1 consisting of the isolates from Iran, ribotype 2 consisting of the isolates from China and Korea, and ribotype 3 composed of an isolate from China. This finding suggests the presence of intraspecific genetic diversity within <i>S. irregularis</i>.</p>
