Newly Introduced GAMBI and OSTREO Indices for Epiphytic Dinoflagellate Communities

The extreme irregularity in the spatiotemporal distribution of the abundance of epiphytic dinoflagellates (EPDs) has long been an obstacle to the scientific understanding of ecology and ecophysiology of natural EPD communities. EPD cells actually inhabit 3D-3D microhabitats on the 3D surface of host macroalgae (MA) which in turn inhabits 3D aquatic space. To establish a single integrated method to measure or describe the ecological adaptation status of the EPD community, two community indices, the GAMBI index and the OSTREO index, were introduced based on genus-specific EPD abundance ratios of MA samples. These two indices were shown to represent subsurface fluid dynamics (e.g. water turbulence or water motion) at the 6 sampling stations along the Jeju coasts, particularly at an open coastal station with strong turbulence (Station 4) and a very stable station inside of a concave and protected embayment at the eastern end of Jeju Island (Station 1).
