Dominance of invasive Chilo partellus over native stem borers in maize fields of Türkiye

The invasive spotted stem borer, Chilo partellus Swinhoe (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), has become a dominant pest in maize fields of Türkiye since its introduction in 2014. This study investigates its impact on native stem borers, Ostrinia nubilalis Hübner, 1796 (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) and Sesamia nonagrioides Lefebvre 1827 (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), six years after its establishment in the East Mediterranean region. The field monitoring in Adana Province, Türkiye was conducted during the first and second maize cropping seasons in 2020 and 2021. Population dynamics, infestation rates, and pest diversity indices were analyzed using field data through Generalized Linear Models (GLM) and ecological indices, including the Shannon–Wiener index, Simpson’s Dominance, and Evenness measures. The results reveal that C. partellus exhibits superior competitive abilities, displacing native species, during both the first and second cropping seasons. Its dominance is supported by its higher relative abundance, reduced species diversity, and significant negative interactions with native pests, as confirmed by statistical analyses. Seasonal factors and plant phenology also influence pest populations, with C. partellus peaking during the generative stages of maize growth. These findings highlight the ecological and agricultural challenges posed by C. partellus, emphasizing the need for climate-adaptive integrated pest management strategies to mitigate its impact on maize production in Türkiye.
