Notes on recent outbreaks of the scarab beetle Pentodon algerinum dispar in Israel

Pentodon algerinum dispar (Baudi) (= PAD) has been recorded in various regions of Israel since 1924 and was reported in the 1940s as a minor pest. However, over the past decade, PAD populations have increased sharply, causing significant damage to subsoil field crops. Monitoring with light traps in underground crop systems in the Hula Valley and the Western Negev suggests two annual flight periods. The rise in PAD populations has indirectly contributed to a reversal in the trend towards reducing synthetic pesticide use in agricultural areas. Changes in PAD populations in Israel over time may be tracked through a historical analysis of sweet potato cultivation, as this crop appears to be particularly sensitive to PAD damage. Breakthroughs in virus-free propagation of sweet potato, along with the use of heptachlor and, later, methyl bromide, enabled successful cultivation of sweet potato and other underground crops. However, the rapid phase-out of methyl bromide in the early twenty-first century appears to have facilitated the resurgence of PAD. Management strategies involving light traps and entomopathogenic agents may offer an effective alternative to the current heavy reliance on synthetic pesticides for PAD control.
