Host stage preference and biology of Bracon hebetor (Say), an ecto-larval parasitoid of Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith)

Bracon hebetor (Say) is a gregarious, idiobiont, ectoparasitic wasp that attacks larvae of several lepidopteran species including Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith). The aim of this study was to identify the most suitable larval stages of S. frugiperda for optimizing the mass production of high-quality B. hebetor females. The parasitic females laid eggs on all larval stages of S. frugiperda except the 1st instar. However, none of the parasitoid larvae survived on 2nd instar larvae of S. frugiperda. Among the tested larval stages, later instars (5th and 6th) were the most suitable for the overall fitness of B. hebetor in terms of shorter developmental time, higher paralytic rate, greater survival index, larger-sized progeny, more proportion of female offspring, and higher fecundity. These results showed that B. hebetor is a potential candidate for the bio-suppression of this invasive pest. The findings provide the basic information for the mass multiplication and augmentative release of this parasitoid as a biocontrol agent against S. frugiperda.
