Life history traits and feeding efficiency of generalist predator, Geocoris ochropterus Fieber against Spodoptera frugiperda (JE Smith) with stage-specific estimates of its population and predation rates
摘要
Managing Spodoptera frugiperda (JE Smith), is crucial due to its devastating impact on global crop production, particularly in maize leading to significant economic losses and food security concerns. This study investigates the life history traits and feeding efficiency of the generalist predator, Geocoris ochropterus Fieber in regulating the invasive pest, S. frugiperda. The study analyzes the predator’s life cycle using two-sex life table approach, by examining their patterns of growth, reproduction, survival, consumption rates and projection across different life stages. G. ochropterus successfully completed its life cycle when fed on larvae of S. frugiperda. The values obtained for λ (finite rate of increase), r (intrinsic rate of increase), R0 (net reproductive rate), GRR (gross reproductive rate) and T (mean generation time) were 1.071 day−1, 0.069 day−1, 53.070 eggs/individual, 107.060 eggs/individual and 57.614 days, respectively of G. ochropterus fed on larvae of S. frugiperda. The C0 (net predation rate) was determined as 173.61 larvae. The study projected both population growth and predation potential over time by analyzing key life table metrics including reproductive values, survival rates and predation parameters. The results suggest that G. ochropterus can significantly contribute to the regulation of S. frugiperda populations, highlighting its potential in sustainable pest management strategies.
