Optimal land allocation for vegetable farming in Jammu & Kashmir: a multi-objective programming approach

Vegetables are essential for nutritional security and economic development in agricultural regions. This research examined the optimization of land allocation for vegetable farming in the Jammu & Kashmir region, focusing on marginal, small, and medium-sized farms cultivating three crops per year. Utilizing both primary and secondary data, multi-objective programming (MOP) models were employed to balance objectives of income maximization, employment generation, and the minimization of fertilizer and pesticide use. The results indicated significant variability in optimal land use strategies across different farm sizes. For marginal farmers, the optimized allocation to cauliflower, cabbage and knol khol in different seasons led to a substantial increase in income to Rs. 211,675.27 per hectare and employment to 324 man-days per hectare. Small farmers similarly benefited, with income rising to Rs. 199,656.49 per hectare and employment to 316.46 man-days per hectare. Medium farmers achieved higher income levels, reaching Rs. 219,465.81 per hectare, and increased employment to 370.60 man-days per hectare, alongside significant reductions in input costs. Policy recommendations arising from this study included promoting crop diversification, supporting sustainable agricultural practices, enhancing extension services, providing financial assistance, and improving agricultural infrastructure. These measures aimed to enhance the productivity, profitability, and sustainability of vegetable farming in Jammu & Kashmir.
