<p>Expression for the point-spread function (PSF) of an optical imaging system is given in terms of its pupil function, and the optical transfer function (OTF) which is its Fourier transform and, in turn, is the autocorrelation of the pupil function. The physical significance of the OTF is illustrated and its properties are described. Although the OTF is generally a complex function, it is real for a symmetric circular pupil function. The focus of this paper is on the OTF of a system aberrated by astigmatism that was first calculated and published by Professor De in 1955. Plots of the astigmatic OTF are provided. While this OTF is real, yet some authors calculated it to be complex, knowing fully well the work of Professor De. We explain the reason for their error. The paper is written as a review article.</p>
