Fabrication of sucrose concentration optical sensor based on D-shaped single mode optical fiber
摘要
In this paper, we present a comprehensive study focusing on both numerical simulations and experimental fabrication of side-polished (SP) single-mode fibers (SMF) to examine their evanescent field interactions with different surrounding medium (different sucrose concentrations). The study utilizes the side-polishing technique to expose part of the fiber’s core to the surrounding medium, enabling the evanescent field to extend beyond the core and interact directly with the external medium and formation what is known as D-shaped optical fiber. This interaction is crucial in refractive index sensing, where changes in the surrounding medium’s refractive index led to measurable variations in light propagation within the fiber. In this study, the finite element method was used to predict the optical properties of side-polished single-mode fibers (SP-SMF). Throughout the experimental work, the sucrose concentration was changed from 0 to 40% and the relation between the measurable transmittance and sucrose concentrations exhibited a linear behavior with sensitivity of 224%/RIU for bent fiber.
