<p>Food adulteration is a major concern in food production around the globe. It dilutes the effective components and has a detrimental effect on human health. Various robust techniques have emerged for the prevention and control of food fraud, and it is in this context that laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy(LIBS) has performed exceptionally well. LIBS has emerged as a promising analytical technique in the food sector as it can easily characterize and identify the samples and provides fast multi-elemental analysis without requiring any sample preparation. Despite the above benefits, LIBS is still an under-utilized technology in the food sector because of its high setup cost and lack of LIBS expertise in this sector. This review paper aims to explore the scope and capabilities of LIBS for detecting adulteration in various food samples. An outline of LIBS fundamentals and instrumentation is also provided.</p>
