<p>From a commercial perspective, <i>Schizopyge niger</i> is one of the most significant food fish among the Schizothoracids. The fish known locally as “Ael Gad,” is a lacustrine species highly valued in Kashmir. The fish, found in Kashmir’s lakes and rivers in large numbers, is a member of the Cyprinidae family. Otoliths are calcified structures that can be found in the inner ear of fishes that mainly function in hearing and balance. Information that the otolith contains can be used to indicate ecosystem range, spatial distribution, and stock structure of fish species. In the present study, the otoliths of snow trout <i>Schizopyge niger</i> are very distinct. The shape of otoliths is obovate with concave inner face and concave outer face. The outline is sinuate to dentate and in some individual, it is serrate also with deep dorsal and ventral depression where dorsal margin is mostly dentate. In the anterior part of otoliths, rostrum well developed, little pointed rostrum with an excisura and a clear antirostrum. Exicisura opening wide with clear groove. The sulcus is well-defined, but poorly developed ostium and cauda. The sulcus is with circumsulcal depression, situated closeto the sulcus.Ten otolith morphometric variables of this species were investigated in two distant areas, the Dal lake and river Jhelum (area (A), length (L), width (W), perimeter (P), Circularity, Rectangularity Form-factor Ellipticity, Roundness, Aspect ratio). The value of rectangularity, form factor and ellipticity from both the selected water bodies is less than 1 which indicates that the otolith is neither a perfect circle nor a perfect square and is irregular in shape. The shape indices showed no significant difference between the sampling locations. The study recommends that otolith shape anlaysis is an efficient phenotypic marker to assess the stock structure of fishes than morphometric analysis.</p>
