Temporal Variation of Floral Visitors and Their Visitation Pattern on Niger (Guizotia abyssinica (L.f.)) Cass. in North Bengal, India

This study investigated insect visitors of Guizotia abyssinica in Cooch Behar, North Bengal during 2015–2016, focusing on visitor diversity, abundance, diurnal visitation patterns relative to floral resource availability, and the impact of abiotic factors on visitor abundance. Fifteen insect flower visitors from ten families across four orders were recorded, with thirteen species newly reported as G. abyssinica floral visitors in India. Diptera comprised the largest proportion of visitors (38.30%), followed by Coleoptera (30.66%), Hymenoptera (15.84%), and Lepidoptera (15.19%). Apis cerena indica, the only Hymenopteran species, was the predominant visitor (relative abundance 15.84%). Floral visitor abundance varied significantly throughout the day, peaking between 6 and 10 am with the most similar species composition. Diptera were the first visitors, with maximum abundance between 7 and 9 am. Apis cerena indica peaked at 11 am, Lepidoptera between 10 am and 12 pm, and Coleoptera were present consistently throughout the day. While temperature, relative humidity, and precipitation were examined, floral number and resources had the most significant influence on insect abundance. These findings highlight the importance of G. abyssinica as a nectar and pollen resource for diverse insect visitors and its potential role in enhancing pollinator abundance in co-flowering crops such as mustard.
