<p>Coccinellids (ladybird beetles) are predators of insect pests in tropical agricultural systems. These predators face risk of predation from different vertebrates and non-vertebrates, including birds. Avian predation can reduce the population of coccinellid beetles and disrupt their potential for biological control. This study investigated the relationship between insectivorous birds and coccinellids in 20 eggplant or brinjal farms in Purulia district, West Bengal, India. We recorded a total of 920 insectivorous birds belonging to 49 different species and 7 orders, with the highest abundance belonging to the order Passeriformes. Ladybird beetles were represented by 232 individuals and belonged to 12 different species. Generalized linear models (GLMs) and linear models (LMs) showed that coccinellid abundance and diversity decreased with the abundance and diversity of insectivorous birds. This study underscores the importance of top-down control of arthropod natural enemies by avian predators in tropical agricultural landscapes.</p>
