Phylogenetic Investigations on Subfamily Lycaeninae from the Northwestern Region of India

The study analyzes the phylogenetic relationships within the Lycaeninae subfamily using mitochondrial COI gene sequences. It found varying degrees of genetic divergence among different genera, with Athamanthia and Apangea being the closest related, than Lycaena and Heliophorus showing the most significant divergence. The analysis identified five major clades, each grouping distinct species, offering insights into the evolutionary history of the ‘Coppers’. This genetic data helps in understanding the evolutionary relationships and species classifications within this butterfly subfamily. The findings highlight the value of genetic barcoding in species identification and phylogenetic reconstruction.
