Food supply implications of healthy diet consumption in Senegal by 2050
摘要
Using census data of 2013 and 2023 combined with a representative household food consumption survey of 2017/18, this article outlines an approach to contextualise two international reference diets to estimate the food supplies needed for healthy diet consumption in Senegal by 2050. The findings of this simulation indicate that total food supplies on average should approximately triple (as compared to a doubling of the total population), while supplies of animal-based food, legumes/nuts, and horticultural products need to increase even more dramatically, especially eggs and dairy products. Given the environmental impact of producing these foods combined with their perishable nature, a comprehensive food system approach is needed to identify the right technologies and locations to increase production, storage, processing, and transport infrastructure. In addition to creating more efficient and environmentally sustainable food systems, rural areas and vulnerable groups should be economically empowered to be able to afford these healthy diets.
