Ossification development condition after recruitment in relation to pigmentation stage and otolith increments in Japanese eels Anguilla japonica

The skeletal system of the Japanese eel Anguilla japonica from glass eels to elvers after recruitment into the estuary was observed and investigated for relationships with pigmentation stage and number of otolith increments outside the freshwater mark. Ossification of individuals freshly recruited was undeveloped when compared with large yellow eels, indicating that they were in the process of ossification. Of the 11 bones used for observations, a significant relationship was observed between the progress of ossification and pigmentation stage development in eight bones. For the same eight bones, a positive correlation was also found between the number of otolith increments outside the freshwater mark, suggesting a relationship with the period after recruitment into the estuary. Correspondence analysis was used to examine the similarity of ossification trends for each bone at each pigmentation stage, which revealed that the VA, VB1, and VB2 group (early glass eel), the VIA0 and VIA1 group (middle glass eel), and the VIA2, VIA3, and VIA4 group (late glass eel) could be categorized together, and VIB showed markedly greater ossification than the other stages, implying the potency of combining pigmentation stages based on the bone growth condition.
