Brains of Japanese fish: analysis using a new index of brain size

The brain size of 102 Japanese fish species (Tuge et al. An atlas of the brains of fishes of Japan, Tsukiji Shokan Publications, Tokyo, 1968) was measured from photographs following a new method. This approach analyzes two-dimensional images to provide indices for the overall brain size and that of specific regions, including the olfactory bulb, telencephalon, inferior lobe, optic tectum, and cerebellum. Visual inspection of the brain profiles revealed four distinct types, indicating diversity in brain morphology among Japanese fish. The clustering pattern of the brain profile does not correspond with taxonomic classification pattern. This divergence of the profiles is not random, but represents a classification into a limited number of recognizable patterns. Despite the known environmental (saltwater vs. freshwater) and behavioral (nocturnal vs. diurnal) factors influencing body length, these factors did not significantly explain the variations in brain size and profile types.
