Growth and composition analyses of the hydrogen-oxidizing bacterium Hydrogenovibrio marinus MH-110 in a natural-seawater-based medium: preliminary study to improve production profitability

Bacterial protein is a promising alternative protein source for aquafeed, and its production profitability is of significant importance. We examined a modification of the culture medium for a hydrogen-oxidizing bacterium, Hydrogenovibrio marinus MH-110, to achieve a cost reduction, and followed this with the retrieval of valuable by-products to improve cost efficiency. Natural seawater was used an inexpensive medium component instead of using a chemically defined medium, and the cellular components were comprehensively analyzed with GC–MS. No negative effects on the cellular growth, protein content, and amino acid profile were observed in the culture with natural seawater, indicating that it can be utilized for cost-saving production. Through GC–MS analyses of cellular components, various candidates for valuable by-products—including amino acids, saccharides, and a fine chemical, ectoine—were identified. Our study provides information to facilitate the commercialization of the production of hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria for aquafeed.
